Are you doing Veganuary this year? We've got you covered! Check out our top food and drink swaps suitable for vegans.

Whether you're concerned about the welfare of animals, conscious of your impact on the planet or just going vegan for a change this month, we've got five top tips and swaps to help you embrace Veganuary without giving up your favourite things.

1. Milk Vegan Swaps

Lucky for you, if you love ice cream, frothy coffees and cereal, there are plenty of options for milk alternatives suitable for vegans and they all have different qualities.

  • Soya Milk
  • Rice Milk
  • Hemp Milk
  • Oat Milk
  • Almond Milk
  • Hazelnut Milk
  • Coconut Milk
  • Cashew Milk

2. Egg vegan swaps

In baking, there are plenty of options to swap for eggs including mashed banana, chia seeds, flax seeds and tofu. In this case, eggs are used to provide structure, to help your bakes rise and to provide moisture and richness.

One curveball to this rule though is if you're requiring egg whites for meringue. Rumour has it that using the gloopy water from a tin of beans (such as chickpeas) known as 'aquafaba' can help you make a great vegan meringue.

If you're looking for scrambled eggs, often a good vegan alternative is scrambled tofu, but there are actually some 'vegan eggs' which (although expensive...) do their very best. Most of these though are currently only available in USA or online.

3. Cheese vegan swaps

Frequently described as one of the hardest food groups to leave behind when entering a vegan diet, there are plenty of cheese alternatives on the market, many of which are available in your local supermarket.

But the debate remains on whether it's actually any good or if it's just like eating feet-smelling rubber...

A few swaps though include exchanging cream cheese for cashew cream, and using nutritional yeast for some added 'cheesy flavour'.

4. Meat and fish alternatives for vegans

Clearly the main food groups absent from a vegan diet are meat and fish, but ensuring you get enough protein is vital. Vegetarians often use cheese and quorn as a viable substitute for this, but both of these are not suitable for vegans.

Soya mince, lentils, beans and nuts are good options for getting a dose of protein.

5. Alcohol suitable for vegans

Why would alcohol not be suitable for vegans??

Some alcohol is actually made unsuitable for vegans during the filtering process. This often involves ingredients such as fish bladders, gelatine, egg whites and sea shells. This usually affects wine and beer.

Most supermarkets now stock vegan-friendly alcohol.
