A diagnosis of colon cancer two and a half years ago was the catalyst for Pat's weight loss.

She told Stray FM:

"Because I'd already lost a brother to cancer who was only 51, it was a real shock.

"Very quickly Harrogate Hospital did what they can and it was removed. But it was a big enough shock to make me sit back and take a look at why it could've happened.

"I realised that obesity does play a part in certain cancers and colon cancer is one of them."

Pat saw that ITV was looking for applicants for 'This Time Next Year' and signed herself up.

The show, hosted by Davina McCall, follows people as they pledge to change something by 'this time next year'.

Cameras followed Pat for 12 months as she tried to reach her goal of losing 5 stone.

Tonight's show in the first in the series and a weight loss special.

Pat added:

"I thought it would be a good thing if other people can know my story and understand there are significant benefits to not being overweight."

Near the end of the filming, Pat renewed her vows with her husband on their 45th anniversary.

She said:

"It was wonderful because when you first get married you don't have the privilege of having two grandchildren there! We involved all of our family. Our son Adam was our Best Man, my daughter Nicola was the Maid of Honour, my granddaughter Olivia was the flower girl and my grandson, at 12-years-old, walked me down the aisle.

"It was a truly memorable day."
