Community health hub, Wellness Harrogate, recommends looking at these six aspects of wellbeing to investigate how your town is  doing in the world of health.

  • Good health is about more than exercise and diet.
  • Wellness champion, Francesca Hepton, is encouraging local people to look at these 6 Dimensions of Wellness to assess strengths and weaknesses of their hometown.
  • How well do you think your area is doing?

1. Physical Health

The most visually obvious sign of health, physical fitness is vital.

Harrogate's spa town origins means that the area has been a destination for healing since the 17th century, and this is something that continues into the modern day.

There are over 70 health and fitness clubs to choose from... no shortage there then! Physical health is still a key focus of the town.

The great outdoors also offers plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy exercise amongst some gorgeous Yorkshire scenery without paying a penny.

Drinking water and eating a nutritional, balanced diet is also important.

Running, walking, team sports, classes... the possibilities are endless when it comes to maintaining good physical health.

2. Mental Health

The promotion and discussion of mental health is on the rise, and with good reason.

“Mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder. It is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.

World Health Organization

According to Wellness Harrogate, the town of Harrogate is forward-thinking in this department, and provides local residents with the confidence to be able to talk about mental health though a wide range of community and health groups.

3. Spiritual Wellbeing

This dimension of wellness is about personal growth, but also includes more than you might think.

"It's not just a religious thing, it's something about being more enlightened and trying different things... and Harrogate is always open to trying different things."

"On a personal level, it's about deepening your understanding of life and by doing so, whichever way you choose to do it, through meditation or through church or through reading or by bungee jumping off a cliff, you're extending and broadening your horizons."

Francesca Hepton, Wellness Harrogate

Harrogate has a multitude of churches, inlcuding a spiritualist church, as well as numerous special events, adult learning, conferences and theatres.

4. The Environment

Referring to all aspects of your surroundings, both natural and man-made, the environment can have a major affect on your health

The water we drink, the air we breathe, the food we grow and eat all come in to play.

The town of Harrogate is a very fortunate town in the environment dimension, both aesthetically and ecologically

5. Security

Feeling safe from crime in your home and local area is one part of this dimension.

Other aspects include financial and job security and strong, loving relationships.

6. Lifestyle

Lifestyle wellness is all about balance!

Work hard, play hard, but choose your lifestyle choices wisely.

As Wellness Harrogate says "poor lifestyle choices will ultimately end up with a poor level of physical and mental health, fatigue, dissatisfaction, low self-esteem and even diseases."
