8 ways to become more eco-friendly in the bathroom

To celebrate Stray FM's Green Month, we've put together a few simple ways you can become more eco-friendly in the bathroom.

1) Cut out plastic

Plastic is a worldwide issue, and with good reason – 1 in 3 turtles in the oceans have now eaten plastic. Bathroom items such as plastic containers, cotton wool buds and disposable razors can easily be reduced, cut out completely or replaced with more eco-friendly materials.

2) Recycle in the bathroom

Many people are familiar with recycling in the kitchen, but often less so in the bathroom. Plastic bottles, cardboard toilet roll tubes or aerosols - do those items often make it to the recycling bin? Perhaps you could start have a separate bin or bag for that in the bathroom. Or just make the short trip downstairs... with a towel on please!

3) Swap to washable cotton wool pads

If you use two or three cotton wool pads every day, that’s over 1,000 every year that probably head straight to landfill. How about swapping to reusable washable ones instead? Costing about £10 for 20 of them, they can be put in the wash, and actually cost you less money over the course of a year! Stray FM's Beth Parsons tried this recently and she loves them!

4) Get rid of the wet wipes

Items such as face wipes and wet wipes are not only going to landfill if they go in the bin, but if people flush them down the toilet, they're also blocking the sewers. The so called 'fatbergs' which are accumulations of fat, wet wipes and other non-biodegradables are causing big problems for water companies. Switching to muslin clothes or flannels that can be washed and reused is much more eco-friendly. Alternatively, you can buy biogradable options.

5) Avoid micro beads

Micro beads have been used for various body products such as face scrubs and shower gels for a while now, but they are actually bad for your health and they usually end up in the ocean after being washed down the drain. Making the swap to products that use ingredients such as sugar or salt instead of microbeads will make a difference.

6) It's time to change. Period.

Dealing with the time of the month is never going to be a doddle, but if you're using applicator tampons, you're probably sending around 200 applicators to landfill every year.  Consider switching to non-applicators, or cardboard applicators. You could even give some special underwear or mooncups a try.

7) Shorten your showers

Spending 1 minute less in the shower could save you £100 a year (based on a family of four using a power shower daily with a flow rate of 16 l/min)

8) Fix that drip

According to Yorkshire Water, fixing a dripping tap could save you £18 and 5,500 litres of water a year.
