"It's a fantastic place": Harrogate cancer centre celebrates major milestone

Published at 7:01am 15th March 2019.

A Harrogate cancer centre is marking a major milestone today.

  • The Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre opened five years ago today
  • The day unit, based at Harrogate District Hospital, treats people from across the district
  • It also offers other support services like complementary therapy and financial advice
  • Past and present patients, staff, fundraisers and volunteers are marking the milestone

The Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre opened on the site of Harrogate District Hospital five years ago.

Patients both past and present, along with staff, volunteers and fundraisers are marking the milestone.

The centre has been collating people's stories, and a special event to mark the anniversary is taking place at the unit today.

"It's not doom and gloom"

Ann Fallenstein has been going to The Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre since she was diagnosed with a type of blood cancer in 2015.

Ann told Stray FM:

"You walk in and it's not doom and gloom at all, it's a beautiful building.

"The staff from A to Z are absolutely amazing with us. It's always jovial, it's not put on. And it's just a nice, comfortable place to come.

"It is daunting as well, but you know you've got to go through this to keep going.

"It is a fantastic place."

Nurse Rachel Sanderson has worked at the centre for the last two years.

She said:

"Like Ann says, we try and make it so it's not an awful experience for the patients.

"We want people to come in and be relaxed and to be met by friendly nurses and just have that care, those familiar faces."

As well as being a treatment centre, The Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre also offers other support services.

Complementary therapy treatments, a hair loss service and a dietician service are all available.

Phil Bremner, the centre's dedicated Benefits and Welfare Advisor said:

"People might be on sick pay or reduced pay. They might have increased heating or transport costs.

"Macmillan estimates the average cost of a cancer diagnosis is an extra £500 a month.

"It's the location of me being in this centre which is fantastic for patients because they know who to come to.

"It's a very personable and one to one approach, rather than having to phone a call centre."
