Local hip and knee specialist Jon Conroy has celebrated his 100th robot-assisted operation at Nuffield Health Hospital in Leeds.

  • Jon Conroy has performed 100 hip and knee replacement operations using state-of-the-art robotic arm technology
  • The robot works alongside surgeons to improve the accuracy and precision of operations
  • Jon Conroy became the first surgeon North of London to use robot-assisted techniques in 2017

Hip and knee surgeon Jon Conroy was thrown a celebratory cake-cutting ceremony at Nuffield Health Hospital Leeds after completing his 100th robot-assisted operation.

After performing the first procedure using the robot in 2017, the surgeon and his team have been helping private patients locally for the last two years.

"It's great to see patients a year after their surgery getting back to all those activities they were doing before and spending time with their family and grandkids.

"The other reason for today is to thank the staff that have worked with us. They've been really enthusiastic and got behind the robot."

Robot-assisted surgery

The state-of-the-art technology works alongside surgeons from the pre-surgery planning stage of operations, mapping out where cuts and adjustments are to be made during the procedure.

The robot then assists during surgery itself, allowing the surgeon to make joint replacement with pin-point accuracy and reduce human error, guiding the surgeon to within fractions of a millimetre.

Although only available to private patients, the surgery is becoming increasingly popular and is a big step forward for Nuffield Health Hospital in Leeds according to the hospital's Director Maria Robinson:

"In achieving 100 we're much more well-versed in the delivery of this procedure and it's an important milestone.

"It's a great privilege to work with Jon, he brings a lot of expertise with him and he has been fundamental in the development of the service here, but it's testimony to great teamwork and we've got a highly skilled team who have been receptive to the skills required to meet the technology advancement."
