Ilkley to get a Parkrun

Ilkley to get a Parkrun

Published at 5:57am 10th April 2019.

New Parkrun events planned including Ilkley

  • Ilkley could soon get its own Parkrun.
  • It's part of efforts to get more people exercising.
  • A recent report by Active Bradford has found a quarter of people locally are classed as 'inactive'.
  • Park Runs are weekly 5k runs in public parks.

A Parkrun could be introduced in Ilkley as part of a push to get more people active.

It comes as new figures reveal a quarter of adults locally are classed as 'inactive'.

Parkrun events, which are weekly 5k runs, are being set up to encouraging more people to exercise.

The plans include introducing a total of four Parkrun events across the Bradford district.

The move comes as new figures show that while the percentage of people locally who do less than 30 minutes of exercise a week has fallen, a quarter of adults are still classed as “inactive.”

An annual report by Active Bradford, which will be discussed by Councillors next week, reveals what efforts are being made to get more people exercising.

One of big success stories in getting more Bradford people active are the numerous Parkrun events that have been started in local parks.

The report says that there are currently discussions underway to to introduce a number of new Parkruns - in Bowling Park, Wibsey Park, Peel Park and Ilkley.

It says “inactivity levels” – the percentage of adults who undertake less than 30 minutes of moderate activity per week, have dropped across the Bradford district.

In November 2016 almost a third of adults (31 per cent) fell into this category.

But in May 2018 that figure had dropped to 24.1 per cent.

The report says:

“The data shows that Bradford is one of only a handful of local authority areas across the country that has had a significant reduction in inactivity levels.”

Councillors will be told the data shows that men are more active than women, those on higher incomes are more active than those on lower incomes and that the older a person is the less likely they are to be active.

The report also includes data from Born In Bradford, which shows that over three quarters of children are not meeting recommended levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity a day – agreed to be at least 60 minutes. 77 per cent of children in Bradford fail to meet this target.

Around 60 per cent of a child’s waking day – roughly 7.4 hours, is spent sat down.
Active Bradford is a partnership of agencies that aim to support different groups and promote healthy living policies.

Other activities they have organised include the Daily Mile – where pupils spend 15 minutes a day running. So far 37 primary schools have got involved in the scheme.
