A fundraiser will be held today in memory of a Harrogate woman who took her own life.

  • Shannon O'Hara was 19 when she passed away in the summer of 2017
  • Her friend Laura Smith wants to raise money and awareness in her memory
  • She's organised an event to fundraise for mental health charity Mind
  • It's taking place at Wills & Parker Hair and Beauty between 10am and 4pm

19-year-old Shannon O'Hara passed away in 2017.

Her friend Laura Smith has organised a charity fundraiser in her memory.

Laura met Shannon when they started working together at a beauty salon.

The pair then moved to Wills & Parker Hair and Beauty in Harrogate together.

From 10am until 4pm today the salon will be offering wet cuts for £10, with all proceeds going to charity. The staff will dress up, with Laura saying it'll be a "mixture of fun and raising money for a charity close to our hearts."

Laura added:

"Shannon was just an amazing person. She was so giving and caring.

"It's just letting her legacy live on as well, she always wanted to help people.

"So I'm sure she would be happy that we were doing this in her name as well.

"I see Shannon everywhere, so it has been struggle.

"But having this event is a really good focus and trying to use her memory in a positive way."

As well as raising money for charity, Laura hopes the event will raise awareness too, and encourage people to talk about their mental health.

Laura added:

"We want people to speak out when they're struggling.

"It's not a failure to ask for help. You're doing the best thing you can.

"We're just encouraging people to come down, just join in the fun and donate some money."

The fundraiser will be held between 10am and 4pm at Wills & Parker Hair and Beauty on Tower street in Harrogate, no appointments necessary
