Ripped jeans might be trendy, but what happens when we have a wardrobe malfunction that isn't fashionable?

Take a look at this one:

Would you know how to fix this or would you just buy a new dress?

Sewing, Mending & Stitching was once a valuable life skill.

Many of our parents and grandparents would just "Make do and mend" but nowadays people tend to just buy new clothes.

According to a survey commission by the British Heart Foundation for the launch of their "Big Stitch" event in July:

  • More than half of Brits have admitted to having a lack of sewing skills with almost a half saying they cant even sew a button on properly.
  • Over a quarter of Brits spend up to £100 a year replacing clothes that could have been repaired.

And in the Leeds region:

  • 73% say they can’t sew confidently or at all.
  • 60% of those people say they would be willing to learn how to sew, but haven't.
  • On average people throw away 4 items of clothing a year that could have been easily repaired.

So, is sewing becoming unfashionable?

Polls say the reasons for people choosing not to sew were:

'Too Hard' - 11%
'Old Fashioned' - 10%
'It's a Girls Task' - 8%

Is this true? We turned to the world of celebrity to see if they might be able to help bring back the itch for stitching...

Coldplay's Chris Martin says "We probably sound like a group of grannies in a knitting circle but it’s the truth and it gives us some control over our visual identity. When you are a big band and everyone is taking shots at you, the more things you can do together the better. And if you’re wearing uniforms made by your own hands it helps achieve that. "

"Light will guide you home, and I will try to Stitch you "

The British Heart Foundation's Big Stitch is encouraging consumers to pop into a British Heart Foundation shop, buy an item & inject their own fashion flair to it to help fund life - saving research into heart disease.
