Harrogate has won gold at the Britain in Bloom awards.

Five groups were chosen to fly the flag for the region following success in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition the previous year.

Harrogate, a contender for the coveted Champion of Champions title, lost out to the Lancashire village of Elswick, but was awarded a gold medal for the exceptionally high standard of the entry.

The judges were impressed by the outstanding sustainable planting, Woodlands Community Garden with its emphasis on vegetable growing for healthy eating and Valley Gardens - the "jewel in the crown" - which features a new Japanese garden.

Lynne Mee, from Harrogate in Bloom, tells Stray FM how she feels at winning gold:

The other three Yorkshire finalists - Otley, Starbeck and Whitby - all took home silver gilt awards.

Lynne says they were all cheering each other on:

Hear when Alice Sofield went to talk to Pam Grant from Harrogate in Bloom, Mayor of Harrogate Councillor Anne Jones and James and Nicky Cain from Harrogate Spring Water on Stray FM's Home and Garden Show.
