A local woman has told how support from family and from local care at home provider Home Instead helped her regain her confidence and her health after a serious fall.

  • 95-year-old Peggy Gray suffered damage to her hip and required surgery after a serious fall in December 2017.
  • After receiving extensive care from Home Instead and her family, Peggy is now moving and living independently.
  • We heard from Peggy and those close to her ahead of National Grandparents Day 2019.

Local woman Peggy Gray suffered a serious fall in December 2017 and was forced to have surgery on her hip, spending four weeks in hospital and a further three weeks in rehabilitation on the road to recovery.

As a result of her injury, the 95-year-old lost her independence and needed extensive care and support from Home Instead Senior Care and her family to help with simple everyday tasks.

Home Instead CAREGivers were visiting Peggy as often as three times a day and 7 days a week to provide personal care and ensure she was safe in her own home:

"We worked very closely with Peggy and her family and before we knew it, she was walking around totally independently... We were visiting three times a day and seven days a week. It soon changed to every other day and then it changed to companionship calls in the end. It was phenomenal, it really was."

Peggy recalled her fall in December 2017 and how it impacted her both physically and mentally:

"It was a bad bad time. It took an awful long time to get over as it made such an impression in my mind.

"With help, laughter and fun and all sorts of other things that we used to get up to when Lisa used to help me, I gradually got over that horrible feeling that I'd had in hospital."

The 95-year-old also spoke of the undying help and support of her family, who still visit her on a daily basis:

"My family come in every day of the week, there isn't a day they miss. I'm very blessed really with an amazing family, they really look after me.

"They're busy, professional people with families of their own, but they make the time to come and see me, which is something special."

Almost two years later, Peggy is as independent as ever and attends basketry and sculpting classes, proving age is just a number!
