As we head towards the end of the year and the colder evenings, heartier dishes are becoming the norm. But pairing the perfect tipple with your food is often easier said than done...

  • Red wine is often paired with beef, lamb and pork, whilst chicken is normally enjoyed with white wine.
  • Skipton restaurant Alexander's have an extensive a la carte menu and wine offering, along with experts on hand to offer advice.

With so many different meats and wines, choosing a complimentary pairing can go a long way towards accentuating flavours - but it's not an easy task.

To accompany their popular a la carte menu, Skipton restaurant Alexander's have a team of experts on hand to make sure their customers choose the right accompaniment.

To compliment their grilled meats that include a pork tomahawk steak and Spatchcock poussin, Alexander's Chef de partie Michael suggests a big bold red, common with this time of year:

"A lot of people like to go for big bold reds, like a Malbec, which almost goes hand in hand with a big steak. But if you want to do something a bit different, with a similar body and with a bit more spice and flair, id say a Shiraz.

"The food changes here very often and I think the wine list should always be developing, from really interesting whites from all around the word to some fantastic reds."

The a la carte menu at Alexander's is served Monday to Saturday from 5pm until 10pm, and incorporates a wide variety of locally sourced ingredients with the usual Alexander's twist.

"We look to source the best ingredients, working really closely with our suppliers... we then test the skills of our chefs to produce what we think is the finest food for our menus.

"(The menu is) quite adventurous and can be quite eye-opening when it comes to new flavours and techniques but then we also take care of the diners who are after something more homely and simple."

Paul Cunliffe, Head Chef at Alexander's

The Skipton restaurant is famed for a sense of adventure, however for those who are more conservative with their choice of meal, the menu also features a 'Classics' section that includes their take on sausages and mash, fish pie and a fish of the day.
