Home Instead are using yoga to emphasise the importance of mental and physical wellbeing for their CAREGivers ahead of Self-care Week 2019.

  • Home Instead Senior Care have been emphasising the importance of the wellbeing of their CAREGivers through yoga, as they can often be focused solely on caring for their clients.
  • The chair yoga session is run by Home Instead CAREGiver Nicola Triffitt ahead of Self-care Week 2019, who also runs Blissful Yoga in Harrogate.
  • Self-care Week is an annual national awareness week that focuses on providing support for self-care across communities and families.

Local care at home company Home Instead held a chair yoga session for their CAREGivers to ensure they're focusing on their own mental and physical wellbeing, both of which can be tested when out on the job.

Their CAREGivers are often tasked with personal care, household duties and are frequently getting in and out of cars, all of which can be taxing on the body and cause injury.

Home Instead CAREGiver Nicola Triffitt's chair yoga involves breathing exercises and simple yoga moves for all abilities, helping the team to strengthen their core muscles and relieve anxieties that can arise when on the job.

Home Instead Senior Care head office, Ripley
Home Instead hold monthly meetings for their CAREGivers at their Ripley office, giving them a chance to meet up and share ideas.

After an hour of chair yoga and a discussion about when it will be useful, Home Instead Community Co-ordinator Lisa Stirk explained what she will take away from the session:

"It isn't just about the amazing care that our CAREGivers offer our clients, it's also about the care that they give themselves.

"Nicola Triffitt has given us some practical tips that we can do while we're driving, while we're in between clients, before we even go into a client, or maybe when it's not been a positive visit for you and has been quite emotional. So perhaps to just come back and ground yourself before going onto another client, it's been amazing."

Home Instead CAREGivers also have support available to them via the 'Employee Assistance Programme' - a 24-hour anonymous helpline offering free advice and support for issues such as bereavement, debt and stress.
