Imagine having just six months to learn what it takes to become a jockey.

That's the challenge which Lizzie Richmond, who lives near Ripon, has set herself.

The annual fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support is being stepped up this year, with those taking part having to get fit, find a racehorse and train, before hopefully taking part in a real race at York in June.

Lizzie was inspired to take part after one of her closest friends, Steph Bennington, lost her husband Tim to cancer.

Tim's final quest was to attend the 2016 Great Yorkshire Show, which he managed with a little help from a borrowed mobility scooter.

Here's Lizzie pictured with Tim at the Showground:

Lizzie said: "I knew from speaking to Steph that Macmillan played a huge part in the final months of Tim's life.

"The nurses gave unwavering support to both him and Steph, and helped them both prepare for the harsh reality of living with cancer.

"The nurses understood their fears, their worries and their emotions.

"They offered kindness and compassion.

"Without the support from Macmillan, the last few months of Tim's life would have been even more unbearable."

The Best Western Hotels and Macmillan Ride of their Lives will take place at York on Saturday 17 June.

12 amateur riders will race in aid of Macmillan.

In 2016, those who took part were able to raise £150,000 for people affected by cancer.
