For the first time, Harrogate will stage its own Pride event.

Organisers say 'Pride in Diversity' will celebrate all minority groups, not just the LGBT community.

A number of events are being planned for a week in May, including a march and a party in Valley Gardens.

The first event is 14 May, with the parade and party scheduled for 20 May.

Leonora Wassell, Chair of 'Pride in Diversity', said: "It was the shootings in Orlando that inspired me. It was the way in which people responded. With all that's going on in the world, I thought it was time we talked up for people who are marginalised. To celebrate our differences, rather than be worried about them.

"It's nice to celebrate in Harrogate. There's a large LGBT community, we have the Syrian refugees, we have a Muslim community. So there's quite a few of us from what you would call the minorities."

Leonora says the events will focus on celebrating diversity, with activities in arts, literature and faith.

To find out more, including how to help volunteer at the event, e-mail pid.hg1@outlook.com or search 'Pride in Diversity' on Facebook.
