LISTEN: Why Parkinson's sufferers won't wait

Parkinson's UK campaign

People with Parkinson's across Harrogate, Craven and Wharfedale are backing calls for better treatment.

They say that existing drugs aren't good enough, because they don't stop, slow down or reverse the neurological condition.

The charity Parkinson's UK has launched a fundraising campaign called 'We Won't Wait' to help improve treatment and find a cure - in years, rather than decades.

Whilst there are a range of treatments to help sufferers manage their symptoms for a time, the main drug which they rely on, levodopa, hasn't changed in more than 50 years.

Parkinson's affects an estimated 127,000 people in the UK and most sufferers start to develop symptoms when they are aged over 50.

Around 1 in 20 people with the condition first experience symptoms when they are aged under 40.

Stray FM has been speaking to Jayne Hughes who was diagnosed several years ago and now raises money for Parkinson's UK in Yorkshire:

To help fund the much-needed research, Parkinson's UK has organised special events over the next few months.

Ilkley will host a Walk for Parkinson's in May and Ripley Castle will host a Pedal for Parkinson's and Walk for Parkinson's in July.

Another Walk for Parkinson's is going to take place along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, starting at Gargrave Village Hall, in September.
