Flamingo Land baby giraffe named

Sophie the giraffe

10:25am 17th April 2017

A baby giraffe born at Flamingo Land Resort Yorkshire now has a name, after members of the public were invited to make suggestions.

The female calf will be called Sophie, a popular suggestion after visitors to the theme park likened her to the much-loved children's toy and teether, 'Sophie la Girafe'.

Sarah Mills, Director of Marketing at Flamingo Land Resort Yorkshire, said: "We have been inundated with name suggestions for our new addition, and visitors to the park have enjoyed watching her explore her surroundings with parents George and Lizzy and three other Rothschild giraffes."

The winner of the competition is Karen Trattles, from Bingley, whose four-year-old daughter, Sophie, thinks that "all girl giraffes are actually called Sophie".

Karen received a prize of a family ticket to the theme park and zoo for a day, as well as a VIP feeding session with the Rothschild giraffes.

After hearing that she had won, Karen said: "Sophie and I are very excited to hear the gorgeous new baby will have the same name."

Sarah added: "Other visitors to the park can enjoy viewing our collection of Rothschild giraffes and discover more about these amazing animals during our daily keeper talk which takes place at 12 noon each day."
