Where to watch Tour de/of Yorkshire!! By Christopher Dean

Professional cycling is back in Yorkshire!  The Tour de/of Yorkshire runs from Fri 28th April to Sun 30th April.

Day One is ‘out of town’ with the route starting over in Bridlington and finishing in Scarborough.  Parts of that will be quite a spectacle (I’m thinking Robin Hood’s Bay…how over 100 pro cyclists and all the support vehicles are going to get through that I don’t know), but it’s Saturday and Sunday we are most excited about as the Stray FM patch provides the lanes where the boys and girls will do battle!

WHY WATCH? You don’t need to like cycling to like days like these.  The main bunch of cyclists in a race is called a peleton, and watching one whizz through anywhere is a stunning sight but even more so when it’s on the roads you live and work on.  The sense of occasion is stunning and something you should make the effort to enjoy.

WHERE TO WATCH?  Well unlike most other sports, watching professional road bike racing is absolutely FREE! But make the most of it and pick your spot wisely.  I’ve knocked up my suggestions of where you may make the most of this.  Get your place early to avoid missing out on a good view, and check the news section for precise route details and a list of road closures so you don’t end up leaving it too late and having to walk 4 miles to the nearest point on the route!

Stage2/Women’s Race, Sat 29th April;  starts in Tadcaster, does a tour of a big chunk of the Stray FM patch and finishes in Harrogate

  • Tadcaster.  Starts on the newly reopened bridge, and features the ‘roll out’ where the bike race starts gently with the first few miles not raced.  This is designed as a safe way of getting the riders out of the start town and allows spectators a good close up of the riders and they gently pedal by…so make the most of it!
  • Wetherby.  A beautiful town which will look incredible as the race flies through!
  • Knaresborough.  They’ll be coming in down the hill from Goldsborough, and with points available at the sprint point at the bottom of the hill, they will be FLYING!  Gives you a chance to see how quickly they can go.
  • Cote de Lofthouse.  Cote is French for ‘side’ so basically it means going up the side of the hill.  Heading down though Pateley Bridge they’ll be taking a right….a climb is a good place to watch a bike race because they go that bit more slowly so you can get a good look at them.  It’s always impressive to see how quickly they can go up hill though!  Crowds will be amazing!
  • Masham – the stunning town will look incredible with the chaos of a professional bike race going through it
  • Ripon.  There is another mini-finish line at the bottom of Market Pl W, so another good point to watch a burst of action as those riders who want points in the sprint competition will crank it up to max
  • Harrogate.  The finish line is on the same spot as in 2014 when the Tour de France finished.  Let’s hope there’s not another crash outside of Betty’s.

Stage 3, Sunday 30th April; the stage starts and finishes ‘out of town’ but spends most of the day on our doorstep in the Dales!

  • Ilkley. A big biker’s town, the atmosphere will be great as it whizzes through
  • Addiingham.  Going to look so lovely going through the village, and it’s quite early in the day’s racing so unless someone important has made a break for it early on, the peleton will be going at a casual pace so you’ll get to see them for a few seconds longer.
  • Bolton Abbey.  Just imagine how hot your Instagram is going to look with a lovely snap of the riders flying past the stunning Bolton Abbey
  • Burnsall.  Such a cute village that won’t have ever seen so many people descend on it.  The demand for a park bench will be high.
  • Skipton.  Comes right through the heart of the town, the crowds will be amazing…but 5 or 6 deep so get there early!
  • Haworth.  Relive an iconic moment from the Tour de France as the peleton goes up the cobbles of Haworth Main Street, then out of the village and up the very steep climb out the back of the reservoir. I rode Moorside Lane on the TdF day, great memory
  •  chris tour
  • Cote de Silsden.  Known better as Holden Lane! Always good to watch on a climb if you can, particularly as the race will be entering the latter half of the final day, there could well be quite a chase on.  It’s narrow though so be prepared to park in the town and walk up.
