The 2017 Harrogate Spring Flower Show gets underway today.

Thousands of first-day visitors to the show, which runs at the Great Yorkshire Showground until Sunday 23 April, will be offered a free flower. They'll be invited to wear it for the day to mark national Wear a Flower Day.

The new initiative is being launched by the North of England Horticultural Society (NEHS), organisers of the Harrogate Flower Shows, with the aim of persuading more people to reconnect with plants, flowers and nature.

The organisation says american studies have shown that flowers have an immediate and long-term positive effect on our emotional reactions, mood, social behaviour and even memory - with the gift of flowers generates the most genuine smiles in both men and women.

Show Director Nick Smith said: "We are looking forward to one of our most exciting spring shows for many years with a fantastic range of show gardens, including our biggest ever design, a European first with our spectacular HortCouture exhibition of floral gowns and, of course, the chance for our visitors to reconnect with their inner flower."

Organisers are promising plenty of inspiration for green fingered visitors with large-scale show gardens, with themes ranging from a military memorial to a ride on the 'Magic Roundabout'.

Find out what to expect from the show with Christopher Dean's 3 minute preview, as heard on Stray FM's Family Show:
