Two passengers are paying the price for causing trouble on a flight from Leeds Bradford Airport to Ibiza.

James Briston and Michael Wilson, both of Redcar, have been ordered to give Jet2.com more than £2,000 in compensation after being abusive and aggressive towards the cabin crew.

A court heard how on 26 May 2016, the men were asked several times to stop drinking their own illicit alcohol on board.

They repeatedly ignored verbal warnings, as well as a formal warning letter, and became increasingly abusive and aggressive.

When the crew warned that their behaviour may lead to the plane being diverted, Wilson responded by challenging them to do so, using strong and abusive language.

Briston also aggressively pushed a cabin crew member in the chest.

When the plane landed, both men were escorted away by Spanish police.

At Middlesbrough County Court, the judge said the compensation was "entirely appropriate in the circumstances" and that "Jet2.com is absolutely entitled to adopt a zero tolerance policy towards disruptive passengers".

Briston was also banned from flying with Jet2.com for life and Wilson received a six-month ban.

Phil Ward, Managing Director of Jet2.com, said: "The behaviour of Mr Wilson and Mr Briston was deplorable, and we welcome this decision by Middlesbrough County Court, which is the latest in a number of judgments handed down against disruptive passengers.

"As we enter the busiest time of the year, we will not tolerate disruptive behaviour, which is usually fuelled by alcohol, so this decision should act as a stark warning. That warning is clear; if you act in a disruptive, abusive or aggressive manner on our flights, there can be very serious consequences including banning orders, financial penalties and court action."

Jet2.com's Onboard Together campaign commits the airline to a zero tolerance stance against disruptive passenger behaviour, which includes banning the sale of alcohol on all flights before 8am.
