Skipton welcomes Romans

Romans will be marching into Skipton this weekend, as part of the national Festival of Archaeology.

Visitors to Craven Museum will get the chance to examine key Roman items found in Craven in a 'Hands on History' event.

Children's activities include an excavation area, mosaic-making and toga-wearing.

On Sunday, two Roman legionaries will be at the museum and visitors will be able to find out what life was like in a Roman fort such as Elslack.

There will be child-sized Roman armour to try on and even the chance to take part in a Roman army drill.

Rachel Terry, Museum and Collections Officer at Craven District Council, said: "This promises to be a fantastic event for families and anyone else interested in the Roman period of history.

"Visitors can look at and handle artefacts from the museum's Roman Collection including mosaics, Roman glass and our own 'mysterious object', and there will be a special children's archaeology area.

"This is a great chance for people to come and explore, experience and enjoy the past, and bring it once more to life."

Events are taking place on Saturday and Sunday, from 10am to 4pm, at Craven Museum in Skipton Town Hall.

The Roman legionaries and Roman armour will only be visiting on Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
