Final preparations for Harrogate Autumn Flower Show

HFS 4

12:29pm 14th September 2017

Final preparations for the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show are underway.

The show has a new exhibition called Postcards from the Hedge.

It looks at the ancestry of our most popular plants we know and love today.

You'll get to learn about plants from all around the world - including some unwelcome invaders!

Design teams are putting together their finishing touches to their show gardens.

The show also includes super-sized props and the return of show-stopping plants and vegetables.

The event is on from Friday 15th September to Sunday 17th September.

Show Director Nick Smith has been helping with preparations today: "Plant thugs like giant hogweed and Himalayan balsam are well known imports from the golden age of the plant hunters that have gone on to devastate the ecology of vast tranches of British countryside.

"It's making people aware of where plants have come from in the world and part of that is to identify plants we see in our garden everyday and think 'Crikey, where's that come from?'.

"The display props give an indication for continents, so we've got a giraffe in Africa, a grizzly bear in North America, and so all of these relate to the areas where plants have come from and been introduced to our area.

"It's frantic as it always is but that's half of the fun of what we do, it's the sense of anticipation building up for a great show."
