Dales barn row resolved

Tim's Barn in Gayle

4:30pm 10th October 2017

An isolated barn in the Dales, which was converted into a fully furnished holiday home without permission, is going to be turned back into a basic camping barn.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority has approved a retrospective planning application for 'Tim's Barn' off Beggarmans Road near Gayle.

Planning committee members were told by the barn owners' agent, Andrew Cunningham, that the internal fixtures and fittings would be stripped out, and external railings, flagged areas and gravel drive removed.

He said his clients, Mr and Mrs T Crick, were "keen" to work with the Authority to ensure that the barn offered only "very basic overnight accommodation for walkers".

A recommendation for approval was moved by North Yorkshire County Council representative John Blackie, who is also Chairman of Hawes and High Abbotside Parish Council.

He told fellow members of the planning committee that the barn's owners had tried to "run rings" around the Authority and "undermine its credibility".

Councillor Blackie said: "It was the talk of the town in the Upper Dales. This was a barn which had permission to be converted into a 'stone tent', but which was being advertised as a five-star holiday cottage."

However, he's insisted that there are "no sour grapes", and that he wants to support the new application, on the condition that the internal fixtures and fittings are removed before the camping barn can take any bookings.

This proposal was agreed and the application, when put to a vote, was approved unanimously.

The camping barn will have no vehicular access and will be available for booking in advance by groups wanting short-term basic accommodation.

People staying there will have to bring their own cooking equipment, sleeping bags and mats.

The accommodation will be marketed at school and walking groups.
