A long-running Harrogate family business, will close its doors for the final time this weekend.

The owners of Lowther Fruit Stores on Beulah Street blame a drop in takings and changing customer habits for the decision.

The shop has been a fixture of the town centre since 1956.

But, in the last 2 1/2 years, takings have dropped by around 20%.

Current owner John Mulrooney said: "It's so sad that we can't carry on but it's just the way things have gone.

"Obviously, declining turnover means declining profits and eventually it's come to the point where we're losing money so we couldn't carry on."

Lowther Fruit Stores first started out at the former Lowther Arcade, before moving to the old Harrogate Market after a fire.

It then spent a short spell at Harrogate's then-brand new Victoria Shopping Centre before moving to its most recent home, where its been for 18 years.

John has thanked people for the support shown on social media, but feels unable to turn things around.

He added, "The older [customers] are getting older and older and they die off and the younger generation don't tend to shop like the old folks do.

"I think it's just a trend in people's habits that is changing."

The shop will close for the final time on Saturday.
