School raises money for life-saving kit in Starbeck

First aid team at Rossett School in Harrogate

Students and staff at Rossett School in Harrogate have raised more than £1,000 to help save lives.

The money will go towards installing a community defibrillator in Starbeck, which will be used to treat people who suffer a cardiac arrest.

Fundraisers say that the level crossing on the A59 can make it difficult to get help quickly in an emergency.

Helen Rogers, First Aid and Health Manager at Rossett School, said: "When the crossing goes down, most people know that you can be stuck there about 10 minutes, and every second counts if somebody has had a cardiac arrest.

"It's important that people know how to do CPR and that there is a community defibrillator available for them."

Sixth form student and first-aider Shaun Wilson added: "I'm very proud that we've done this and I'm very proud to be part of the team that are willing to put themselves out there and do this for other people.

"You never know if you're going to be walking along the street and someone is going to drop in front of you."

More donations are now being sought to provide the rest of the funding needed for the new defibrillator.

Donations can be handed over to staff at Starbeck Library.
