Hampsthwaite housing campaigners launch calendar

Hampsthwaite

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 12:32pm 22nd November 2017.

People in a village near Harrogate have launched a calendar to fund their fight against housing plans.

The idea came about after the 'Hands Off Hampsthwaite Village' action group set up an exhibition featuring photos of sites which have been identified for hundreds of new homes.

It was aimed at highlighting how "excessive development" could affect the most picturesque parts of Hampsthwaite.

Each photo featured in the calendar is accompanied by comments and reflections from people who have lodged objections to the proposals.

Grant Blakemore, Vice Chairman of 'Hands Off Hampsthwaite Village', told Stray FM: "Hampsthwaite is already on target to have 100 houses built in it and we believe, in proportion to the size of the village, that's more than enough for a village of this size to cope with.

"Our argument isn't that there shouldn't be housing, it's the disproportionate amount of housing being imposed on Hampsthwaite and other villages.

"On the three occasions where we've had public meetings, it's been standing room only, so the level of concern and support remains incredibly strong."

In response to concerns previously raised by campaigners, Harrogate Borough Council has pointed out that it faces a "significant challenge" to provide more homes across the district.

However, it insists that existing infrastructure will not be expected to cope with new houses and developers must provide additional infrastructure or improvements.

Copies of the calendar are available at Hampsthwaite Post Office and Sophie's Coffee Shop or by e-mailing info@hampsthwaiteactiongroup.com
