Consultees vote against Nidd Gorge relief road

Harrogate congestion, traffic, cars- North Yorkshire County Council

It's been confirmed that consultees have voted against a new relief road in Harrogate, connecting to Bilton Lane, at today's Harrogate Area Committee meeting.

County Councillor Don Mackenzie has confirmed that the consultees at the Harrogate Area Committee meeting earlier today recommend that the relief road option should not be debated any further.

Package B is said to be preferred, consisting of sustainable measures to help reduce congestion in Harrogate and Knaresborough, rather than new highways infrastructure.

Package E introduced the idea of a new relief road being built through Nidd Gorge, connecting to Bilton Lane.

There has been a mixed response from the public following the announcement of the two options North Yorkshire County Council presented last week.

Many of those who attended the meeting today acted in favour of only having Package E put forward, many of whom do not want Nidd Gorge to be disrupted.

The council want to come up with the best solution on how to tackle congestion in the area, which is why they are asking for the public to come forward with their views on the options.

The final decision as to whether both packages will be considered further will be made next week.

Correction: The article originally referred to Package E being the preferred option. This has been now changed to Package B.
