Harrogate man's charity dinner for organ donation

A Harrogate man is putting his second shot at life to good use.

Mark Smith had both kidney and pancreas transplants after 25 years of diabetes lead to kidney failure.

He is organising a charity ball on 26th October 2018:

Back in 2016, Mark won the Bravery Award at Stray FM's Local Hero Awards.

He also went to Westminster on Organ Donation Week to encourage politicians to highlight the importance of donations.

Mark told Stray FM:

"You could be saving several people's lives, ultimately, and it's actually quite hard to put into words what that means to people. It's just enormous.

"All it takes is five minutes of your time. Five minutes could save somebody's life. It could give them 20, 30 or 40 years of life that they may not have had otherwise.

"I had my transplant eight years ago. I could have died waiting for a transplant. I've had all those years since."

Mark plans to hold a raffle at the event and is appealing to anyone who can help donate prizes or sponsorship for the event.

Money raised through ticket sales and the raffle will be split between Kidney Care UK and the organ donation committee at Harrogate District Hospital.
