We CAN talk about mental health

Employer pledge - Time to Talk, Time to Change

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 1:01am 1st February 2018. (Updated at 10:08am 1st February 2018)

Today marks the annual Time to Talk Day - a day where people all across the country are urged to talk about mental health.

The day normally takes place on the first Thursday of February.

Time to Change

According to Time to Change, 1 in 4 people experience a mental health problem every year in the UK.

Half say that the associated isolation and shame is worse than the condition itself.

People with mental health problems who are not able to talk about them, say that can be one of the worst parts of the illness.

Time to Talk

The Time to Talk campaign urges people to be more open about mental health.

It is organised by Time to Change, the campaign to alter how we all think and act about mental health problems.

It wants people, whether they are at home, at work or up the top of a mountain, to have a conversation about mental health.

Employer pledge - Time to Talk, Time to Change

Since its launch in 2014, Time to Talk Day has sparked millions of conversations in schools, homes, workplaces, in the media and online and attracted support from celebrities such as Freddie Flintoff, Stephen Fry and Frankie Bridge.

Emma Avhede, Managing Director at HÄLSA WELLBEING and The Mindful People Company, is urging people to jump on board with the campaign: "The conversations around mental health are changing, and people are becoming more accepting of having these conversations, but one of the things that is a hindrance to us today is that we're working through apps all the time and technology is really fast-pace and we tend to move away and shy away from those face-to-face conversations.

"The importance of one-to-one dialogue is really imperative.

"This also being added to by increasing demands and pressures on everyone and people are reaching a crisis point and looking for support to help them to be fit and healthy in their minds.

"I think primarily it used to be women who were more open about these things and there is still a little bit of a stigma around men, particularly in the corporate environments, but as employers become more open about encouraging people to talk about things, it becomes more acceptable."

HÄLSA WELLBEING and The Mindful People Company aim to support people's well-being in organisations and care settings.

Emma explains what they both provide:

North Yorkshire County Council

North Yorkshire County Council is backing the national campaign that encourages people to take the time to talk about mental health and wellbeing.

County Councillor Michael Harrison, Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Health Integration, said said: “We are taking part in Time to Talk Day because mental health is a topic that we should all feel able to talk about.

"Having these all important conversations can make a big difference to many people. The more we talk, the more lives we can change.”
