Fight to save Knaresborough Market continues

Knaresborough Market

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 6:03am 18th January 2018.

There are still serious concerns about the future of Knaresborough Market, despite assurances from council officials.

Traders fear that potential cutbacks could effectively leave the town with a "pop-up car boot sale".

They're worried that proposed changes may reduce the market to around a third of its current size.

Before Christmas, Harrogate Borough Council said there wouldn't be any changes this year.

Bob the Coffee Man, who has been trading at the market for nine years, said: "Maybe I'm a little bit different, because I don't have a stall and don't need a stall put up, but an awful lot of my trade comes from the other traders. Take them away and I've got nothing.

"I've visited, as a customer, other markets that have four or five stalls - that's not right. This can have 60 stalls, but there's an awful lot of empty stalls and people have left. Somebody needs to go and find them and ask them why did they leave and take proper note.

"Everybody needs to have their say - the traders of the town around us, the customers, a lot of other people involved - not just us traders."

Steve Teggin, President of Knaresborough Chamber of Trade, added: "The stalls that are currently used are heavy, eight to 10-foot long and it's a two-man job putting them up. For the council to even suggest that market traders bring their own stalls and set them up themselves, and then clear up after they've gone, is absolutely ludicrous.

"Basically, they're going to swap what is a traditional 700-year-old market for nothing more than a pop-up car boot sale, and it's just not Knaresborough."

A working group is being set up to help decide what will happen to the markets in Knaresborough and Ripon long-term.

Earlier this week, Harrogate Borough Council announced plans to improve how the markets are promoted.

Stray FM is awaiting a response from the authority regarding the concerns raised by traders in Knaresborough.
