Yorkshire cyclists reach the halfway point of an epic journeyin New Zealand

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 1:30pm 6th February 2018.

A pair of Yorkshire cyclists have reached the halfway point of an epic journey from the top to the bottom of New Zealand.

Chris Brown & Chris I'Anson are attempting to ride over 2200km from the very North of the North Island at Cape Reinga to the southern most tip of the south Island at Bluff.

The ride is expected to last around eighteen days with an average of 120 kms or 85 miles covered every day.

The pair, alongside driver Paul Smith, hope to raise £6000 for two charities - the Starbeck-based Claro Enterprises, that supports people with mental health problems, and the national charity Parkinsons UK.

Yesterday, the riders completed day 9, Levin to Wellington.

Speaking from Wellington, Chris I'Anson,  Managing Director of farm feeds business I'Anson Brothers Ltd, said, "It's been great but extremely tough, particularly in the first two or three days.

"It was all hills, through some tropical forests in 30 degree heat.

"We've done 9 days, 1000 kms, and we're down at Wellington now.

"We're catching the ferry to the south island tomorrow and then we've got 1100km or so to go."

Both are members of Yorkshire's farming community.

Chris Brown has an arable farmer in Baldersby, he said: "New Zealand's an amazing country.

"Being a farmer, New Zealand's all about farming. It's all agricultural based and the people are just fantastic."

On the two charities set to benefit, Chris added, "I've got a friend who has Parkinsons and obviously mental health is very important to me.

"That's why we have the workshop in Starbeck which provides a wondrful service for people, trying to get them back into work."
