An endurance cycling race across Australia has been cancelled after the death of a rider from Harrogate during the event last year.

Mike Hall, 35, was killed near to the end of last year's Indian Pacific Race in a collision with a car south of Canberra.

Organisers of the race, an ultra-endurance ride from coast to coast, posted on their website to say that the race would be cancelled because of the 'potential outcomes' of an upcoming inquest.

Last year, hundreds of cyclists from across the UK attended a memorial at Pavilions of Harrogate.

There was also a mass-participation #RideforMike held in Sydney, Australia.

Organisers Dragon Face Pty Ltd posted the following statement on their website: "Given this situation, and as more information about the potential outcomes of this process have become clear only very recently, it is with an extremely heavy heart that we cancel the 2018 Indian Pacific Wheel Race (IPWR) with immediate effect...

"...Mike Hall was a source of inspiration to so many. The phrase ‘be more Mike’ is something many of us have clung to in the weeks and months following his untimely death."

Hall, who was lying in 2nd place at the time of the collision had previously warned riders about close calls with motorists.
