A new footbridge has been erected at Oakdale Glen in Harrogate.

It is constructed from hardwood, is stronger than its predecessor and will be more resistant to the damp conditions in the area.

The old bridge was removed in November after an inspection carried out by North Yorkshire County Council found it to be decaying.

The location was securely fenced off and a short diversion put in place for walkers.

The new bridge was completed on Sunday.

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Highways and local member for Harrogate Saltergate, said: “The new bridge has been built from sustainably-sourced hardwood from the ekki, or red ironwood tree.

"It is extremely hard-wearing and will treble the life of the structure, so we expect it to serve local walkers well for many years to come.”
