Want to learn the secrets behind the world’s most popular steam railway?

Switch to Channel 5 on Friday 2nd March for the first episode! 'The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard', a three-part documentary series, airs on Friday 2nd, 9th & 16th March 2018 at 8pm. The Channel 5 programme will take you behind the scenes as the railway celebrates its fiftieth anniversary year.

The first of the three-part documentary series sees the railway about to open its door for a new season. To pull in the crowds they’ve hired in star steam engine, Royal Scot, to headline for the week. For General Manager Chris Price, it’s an expensive gamble. This big and powerful steam engine was designed to thunder from London to Glasgow on mainline rails but the heritage railway has much smaller platforms and bridges. Until Royal Scot arrives from her London base and goes through a gauging run on the line they won’t know if she will actually fit the railway.

Commissioned by DSP, part of the Endemol Shine Group, ‘The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard’ has been given a Friday night primetime slot. Viewers will be taken back in time to the golden age of steam, as a tireless army of staff and volunteers provide the inside track on what it takes to run a heritage railway. Join the NYMR as it welcomes coach trips, wedding parties and train spotters alike in what they hope will be the railway’s busiest year yet.

The NYMR granted unprecedented access to DSP, whose co-managing directors Emily Dalton and Donna Clark, describe the show as “a real celebration of the extraordinary heritage and traditions of the country’s railways”.

Earlier this year, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) awarded NYMR £4.6M as part of the £9.2M Sustainability Project, NYMR’s Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey Appeal.  To deliver the investment programme, the NYMR must raise approx. £2.5M from members, passengers and the public over the next five years.
