We could be a step nearer to a devolution deal for Yorkshire.

Representatives from Harrogate and Craven are among council leaders who've met to firm-up proposals for a 'One Yorkshire' bid for the whole region.

The plan will now be sent to Government.

If successful, the One Yorkshire bid could lead to the region getting a directly elected Mayor.

Leaders and representatives of 18 Yorkshire authorities met yesterday.

In a letter to the Secretary of State Sajid Javid, signed by 18 council leaders including Harrogate's Richard Cooper and Craven's Richard Foster, they said:

"We believe that with your Government’s support we can seal an historic devolution agreement with the potential to double the size of our economy to the benefit of the people of Yorkshire and the wider country."

They say they now look forward to taking the Secretary of State up on his offer of urgent meetings with himself and officials to take the proposals forward.
