As tributes are paid to Professor Stephen Hawking, who has died at the age of 76, we've been looking at his links to North Yorkshire.

The brilliant world-renowned physicist descended from a line of tenant farmers in Boroughbridge.

Writing in his autobiography 'My Brief History', Hawking refers to his great Grandfather John Hawking, a wealthy farmer in Yorkshire who had gone bankrupt in the agricultural depression.

Trying to help, his son Robert went bankrupt himself.

"Fortunately, Robert’s wife owned a house in Boroughbridge in which she ran a school, and this brought in a small amount of income.

"They thus managed to send their son to Oxford, where he studied medicine."

The Hawking family are known to have lived at the Grade II listed Chatsworth House on Horsefair and have a family plot at Aldborough Cemetery in the town.
