Refurbishment begins on flats in Ripon, as new affordable housing delayed

Refurbishment work has begun on a block of flats in Ripon, while plans for new affordable housing on the same site remain on hold.

Construction of new houses and flats on Allhallowgate and Finkle Street has been delayed while detailed surveys were made of the underlying ground layers.

Particular attention is being paid to the location of any gypsum deposits.

The results of the surveys are currently being studied and proposals for the new properties will be considered by the council in the near future.

Mike Chambers, the council's cabinet member for housing, said:

"We are committed to developing this site for new affordable housing, with a mixture of town houses and flats but the ground conditions have been more difficult to establish than anyone expected.

"We have therefore decided to start some of the refurbishment work to this retained block of flats ahead of the new build phase of work on the site."

Ripon's unique geology has hit the headlines in recent years, not least due to the appearance of sinkholes.

The internal refurbishment work on Allhallowgate is being carried out by the council's existing planned maintenance contractors, who do similar work in council houses across the borough.
