Concert in memory of Harrogate teen, Dom Sowa

Missing Harrogate teenager Dom Sowa

1:00am 23rd April 2018

The school of a Harrogate teenager who died in Cornwall are holding a concert in his memory.

17-year-old Dom Sowa went missing in the Newquay area last October. His body was found after a major air and sea search.

A crowdfunding campaign has already raised more than £20,000. All proceeds from this and the concert ran by Harrogate Grammar School will be split between the RNLI, young suicide prevention charity PAPYRUS and The Wave Project.

Dom was a keen singer and musician. However, due to his social anxiety, his voice has never been heard until now.

Harrogate Grammar School are holding a music concert called 'Thank you for the music'.

Dom was a Sixth Form student at the school.

The concert will be a celebration of talent and music, as well as a tribute to Dom.

The gig will be extra special, as Dom's voice will be heard for the first time by the school. There will be two pieces of music played, allowing the audience to hear what a talented young man Dom was.

The concert is being held on Friday 27th April, to remember Dom, to remind people that there is help out there and to raise money for the three charities that the Sowa family are championing. It starts at 7pm in the Forum.

Tickets cost £5 and can be purchased via – www.lunchpal.co.uk. Raffle Tickets will be available on the evening, but can also be purchased in advance - www.lunchpal.co.uk.

Harrogate Grammar School want to remind people that there is always help out there.

On their JustGiving page, Dom's family said:

"We will live forever with the knowledge that, if only Dom had found a way to tell us how he felt, or a more effective clinical diagnostic tool had been available, then we might still have our beautiful son here.

"We are so proud of his achievements in the short time he was with us and hope that you will remember him and then go on to live your lives to the fullest as he would have so loved to have been able to do."

Papyrus

This is a leading UK charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide. They provide information and support for young people and worried friends and family through their website and hope-line which has an email option too. They believe that research shows most young suicide is preventable and encourage young people and their loved ones to seek help.

The Wave Project

This is a charity with bases around the UK. Using a combination of surfing, therapy and the ocean the volunteers help young people suffering from anxiety to gain confidence and celebrate their amazing life. They also run ‘beach schools’ - lessons and surf therapy combined so struggling young people can reintegrate into mainstream education. The nearest centre to Harrogate is in Scarborough.

RNLI

The RNLI is an incredible charity whose brave volunteers are dedicated to saving lives at sea through search and rescue, lifeguards, water education and flood rescue. Last year they saved 558 lives and rescued 23 people per day.
