The new chair of North Yorkshire County Council says he is looking forward to meeting people from all walks of life across the county during his year in office.

Cllr Robert Windass was elected to the post at today’s  County Council meeting. He represents the Boroughbridge division on the authority and has been a county councillor since 2013.

 Cllr Windass said:

“It is a great honour to be elected as chair of the county council and I look forward to working with officers and members and all involved with the council during my year in office. I want to engage with people across the county from all walks of life, young, old, all ethnic backgrounds and all religions. I also want to visit as many departments within the council as possible. We know we have wonderful staff doing excellent work and I think it’s right that we go to thank them.”

Cllr Windass’ was nominated by Cllr Michael Harrison, who said he was well qualified and would rule members with a rod of iron. Cllr Derek Bastiman added that he was a man of great integrity and a great advocate for the authority.

His charity for the year will be Candlelighters, which has supported more than 430 children diagnosed with cancer and their families in North Yorkshire.

Cllr Windass was born in Leeds in 1945 and educated at St Chad’s C of E Primary School, where he was a choir boy, before attending West Park High School.

The new deputy chair is Cllr Jim Clark, who represents Harrogate Harlow division and chairs the County Council’s Scrutiny of Health.
