Lorry and car transporter collide on the A1(M) near Ripon

Lorry fire closes the A1(M) northbound near Ripon

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 8:08am 22nd May 2018. (Updated at 2:17pm 22nd May 2018)

The A1(M) is closed northbound after a serious collision.

The motorway is currently blocked between junction 50 (Baldersby/Ripon) and junction 51 (Leeming).

Police, fire and ambulance crews are on the scene, following a collision between a car transporter and another lorry at around 7.00am.

Motorists heading north are being diverted off the motorway at junction 49, with drivers heading towards the north east advised to use the A168/A19.

The road is expected to remain closed for most of the day.

Police are asking drivers to avoid the area.

UPDATE 12.10:  A second collision which caused further disruption to motorists heading north of Ripon has now been cleared. The A6055, running alongside the motorway, was partially blocked between the HECK Sausages HQ junction and the Bedale turn-off, by a separate accident adding to traffic.

People living nearby have told Stray FM that the 'explosion' was audible from their homes.

The road closure left a number of vehicles 'trapped' between junctions 50-51, with work underway to turn them back.

Highways England has urged motorists to remain with their vehicles.
