WATCH: The First EVER Knaresborough Bed Race

Runners head for the river at the first ever Great Knaresborough Bed Race

Ahead of the 53rd edition of the Great Knaresborough Bed Race, we take a look back at how this fantastic family day out all began.

Have you ever tried to tell someone about the Great Knaresborough Bed Race who has never been?

Basically, people take these beds, that aren't really beds, then they decorate them with whatever the theme is that year and parade.

After that they strip them down and run a not-quite-three-mile route up and down the hills of Knaresborough before finally pushing them through the river.

All of this while thousands of people watch and enjoy themselves.

It sounds a bit odd when you put it like that, but as anyone who has been knows, it's a proper Yorkshire day out.

And it all started back in 1966.

Things have changed a lot over the years, the course is a bit less hairy, the beds are a little bit more streamlined (and they're not really beds now!), but the spirit of the event lives on.

We're delighted to share with you this footage of the very first Knaresborough Bed Race which our friends at Sira Studio have polished up and put online for the 21st Century.

The first bed race took place around Knaresborough in June 1966, and we all know what happened to the England team that year... maybe this could be the year it gets repeated...
