WATCH: Record numbers take part in solstice swim at Ilkley Lido

Swimmers in Ilkley have braved the early morning cold to welcome in the longest day of the year.

Some 276 people, a record number, gathered for a dip at Ilkley Lido from 4.30am, to mark the Summer Solstice.

Davy Simpson, from the Friends of Ilkley Lido, said:

"We've been arranging this for the last five years or so.

"With it being midsummer's day we're trying to get people in to enjoy the daylight hours."

Davy added: "It's about 16 or 17 degrees [in the pool] today. 

"They've had to drain some of the water earlier in the week and they've just been filling it up so it's not warmed up as much.

"Normally about this time it's around low 20s.

"But it's definitely fine to be in your trunks or your shorts."

Father and son Dan and Oscar, from Addingham, were among some of the first to go in. They Said:

"We've been doing this for about five years now.

"It's lovely once your in. Lovely and warm!"
