Harrogate Chamber of Commerce 'fully support' Heathrow expansion

Steve Scarre

Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce have thrown their support behind plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport.

A vote on the airport's expansion is due to take place in the House of Commons on Monday.

The chamber are keen to see Leeds Bradford Airport gaining more shuttle services to and from Heathrow, to enable connections with long-haul flights around the world.

Steve Scarre, president of Harrogate District Chamber of Commerce, said:

"Connectivity to Heathrow and on to the rest of the world is vital to growing business in the Harrogate district. If we are to attract major new investment in our area, and support our existing businesses to develop and become world players, we need access to the capital and beyond.

"For this to be possible, expansion at Heathrow is vital, as it will enable further growth in shuttle services from Leeds Bradford Airport to Heathrow in order to connect with long-haul services around the world. Leeds Bradford is doing well with European connectivity, but we recognise that long-haul flights need more passengers in larger aircraft to be viable, hence feeder services from regional airports to Heathrow, and ideally Gatwick, are needed.

"We therefore fully support the plans to create an additional runway at Heathrow."
