Craven Arts gets a home after two years of fundraising

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 5:06am 29th June 2018.

Over 60 artists from the Craven area are celebrating after the Craven Arts group was given a permanent space in Skipton town centre.

It follows two years of fundraising.

Craven Arts was formed in 2016 by five local professional visual artists from Skipton. Virpi Kettu, a renowned Finnish animator, moved to Skipton from Canada and noticed that the spread of the population in the Craven District made it hard for artists to meet, share ideas and promote their work.

After other artists joined with her to set up the charity they have been on a mission to connect more people in the Craven District to art.

Virpi said:

"We will provide opportunities for the Craven community to meet and connect with artists, participate in workshops and see exhibitions by Craven's established and emerging visual artists. I genuinely believe the whole district is going to benefit from the hard work we have put in to get to this point!"

The Craven Arts Studio, located at 7a Otley Street, will operate as a shop and workspace. It will also be an affordable start for local entrepreneurship in creative industries. Prior to taking up residence in the new studio member artists have run lots of free workshops across the district and exhibited in space generously donated by Mill Bridge Gallery, Skipton.

The permanent home is expected to provide workshops and artist talks and allow young people in the region to see the careers that are available in the creative arts.

There will be an Open Day on Sunday 1 July, to coincide with the town's Sheep Day, from 12.00 - 5.00 pm and an evening party which will run from 6.00pm - 8.00pm
