Charity pitches in to help disabled visitors to The Great Yorkshire Show
Published by Lisa Darvill at 12:20pm 12th July 2018.
The British Red Cross has come to the aid of organisers of the Great Yorkshire Show after around 200 visitors with mobility issues were left without equipment to enable them to attend.
The Red Cross stepped in to provide assistance after a commercial mobility aids supplier was no longer able to provide the equipment required.
British Red Cross head of mobility aids Geoff Cheshire said:
"The Red Cross believes everyone who needs a wheelchair should have a right to quickly and easily get one that is right for them, for as long as they need it.
"The Great Yorkshire Show is an important event in the county’s calendar, and one which we were keen to help ensure all visitors could enjoy as planned.
"Our staff and volunteers managed to source and transport 50 attendant wheelchairs to the Show from our base in South Yorkshire, after receiving a call from organisers over the weekend.
"We hope to continue to build on our existing relationship with the Show’s organisers, with a view to providing any further assistance needed in future."
Show director Charles Mills said:
"We were delighted the Red Cross was able to help when we found ourselves without mobility aids at the last minute.
"Like The Red Cross, we firmly believe everyone who wants to attend the show should be able to access the right wheelchair for their needs. And thanks to the charity’s help we have been able to ensure everyone can enjoy our 160th show."
