Service being held to remember Aldborough helicopter crash victim Barry Dodd CBE

Tributes paid to Lord Lieutenant Barry Dodd at York Minster

A service of thanksgiving for the life of North Yorkshire's Lord Lieutenant Barry Dodd CBE is being held at York Minster.

The public service is being held in memory of the self-made businessman and public servant.

Mr Dodd died in a helicopter crash in a field in Aldborough, near Boroughbridge, in May.

Business leaders, Councillors, Mayors, officials from across North Yorkshire and members of the public have all gathered to pay their respects.

Wallace Sampson, Harrogate Borough Council's Chief Executive, has paid tribute:

The Vice Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Major Peter Scrope DL, said:

“Barry knew a very large number of people across a wide range of interests, so we anticipate that a considerable number of people, perhaps more than a thousand, will want to attend this service to remember him.

Barry’s widow, Frances, wants the service to be open to everyone, so there will be no ticketing. A large area of seating will be available to the general public, in addition to designated areas relating to different areas of Barry’s life.”

Cllr. Bernard Bateman, the Mayor of Harrogate, was in attendance:

Bill Cowling, farmer and former Show Director of the Great Yorkshire Show:

Friend, the Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Andrew Jones, said:

"I will remember Barry with the greatest respect and affection as somebody who was a valued colleague and friend

"His impact, I think is in the way he has encouraged others. He always had time for people.

"He was somebody who, not only ran huge business which he built up from scratch, he was also chair of our Local Enterprise Partnership, our Lord Lieutenant, he put stuff back in ways that always managed to be very personal."
