Market place reopens after fire in Ripon

Market place reopens after fire in Ripon

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 6:47am 1st August 2018.

The Market Place in Ripon has reopened in time for Yorkshire Day after it was temporarily closed last night due to a fire.

Two fire engines were called to the incident above Leeds Building Society on the corner of Queen Street and Market Place North.

It is thought the damage was minimal.

A few residents were evacuated from their homes as a precaution, including Sarah Metcalfe. She said:

"It was about 9.00pm that somebody came knocking on our doors to evacuate and telling us there was a fire.

"They couldn't get in for a while so we just had to stay outside and wait."

The scene has now been cleared and is unlikely to impact on today's Yorkshire Day celebrations in the city.
