Some oxygen masks "DIDN'T work" - terrifying Jet2 emergency landing

Jet 2 flight cabin pressure loss

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 2:05pm 13th August 2018. (Updated at 4:05pm 13th August 2018)

A man from Harrogate has described the terrifying moment a Jet2 flight lost cabin pressure and had to make an emergency landing in Bordeaux.

Trevor Deeming was travelling back to Leeds Bradford Airport from Faro, Portugal, on Friday with his wife and two children, when the plane suddenly made a rapid descent.

He said:

"We came to a stop in the sky, and the wings changed what they were doing.

"The captain said 'we're going to do a rapid descent' and panic kind of set in.

"There was one woman who was screaming who had a baby. There were lots of anxious people and it was generally really terrifying. With it being the school holidays there were lots of parents with children."

Medics met passengers in Bordeaux after the emergency landing. Trevor said his ears were bunged up  and his son's ear was bleeding, which he says could be a perforated ear drum.

Trevor added the plane seemed like a "throwback from the 1980s".

He said:

"It was a really old Titan plane, it wasn't a Jet2 plane. When the masks came down, the woman next to me - hers actually fell off, so I had to quickly push across one of the spare masks to her."

"People were commenting 'my mask didn't even work'."

A spokesperson for Jet2 said:

“Flight from Faro to Leeds Bradford diverted to Bordeaux Airport on Friday 10th August due to a technical fault.

“The flight crew followed standard procedure and made a controlled descent before landing safely. We would like to emphasise that at no point was the safety of anyone onboard compromised.

“A replacement aircraft was flown to Bordeaux so customers could continue their journey home, and we would like to apologise to all those customers affected.

"The aircraft will remain on the ground and a team of engineers is carrying out a thorough investigation into the cause of the fault.  At all times the safety of our customers is our number one priority.”
