Behind The Scenes: Policing rural North Yorkshire

Behind The Scenes: Policing rural North Yorkshire

Published by Lisa Darvill at 11:34am 5th September 2018. (Updated at 11:46am 5th September 2018)

With rural crime costing North Yorkshire communities more than £950,000 last year, what's it like policing the most rural areas of the county?

According to a recent report, the cost of rural crime in North Yorkshire was £954,597 in 2017. Although this was a 16% reduction compared to the year before, the force recognised there's still more to do.

Stray FM has been going behind the scenes with Craven's Neighbourhood Policing Team. The team covers approximately 400 square miles, from Ingleton to Sutton in Craven.

As well as responding to incidents, the team's job is to work with communities to prevent crime.

Sergeant Paul Evans said:

"Demand is unfortunately getting higher. I think the control room are taking unprecedented numbers of calls. Part of the NPT role is trying to reduce that demand. Trying to impress on people that need to help us.

"We've had a big increase in issues related to mental health.

"The biggest vulnerability at the moment for us is the South Craven border.

"Unfortunately we've got teams from Bradford, Keighley, Leeds, West Yorkshire wanting to come out and steal high performance motor vehicles. They're what we would class as two in one burglaries. They break into the house, that's the first part, and then the second part is to steal the car."

So what are the main challenges rural officers are facing?
