Fireworks and bonfire safety

Firework safety

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 9:51pm 31st October 2018. (Updated at 10:04pm 31st October 2018)

Halloween and bonfire night can be lots of fun, but it's important to stay safe as Harrogate Mumbler and North Yorkshire fire and rescue have been explaining.

Did you know that there are laws about when fireworks can be sold and to who, plus, the times they can set off?

  • If you are under 18, you can't buy the types of fireworks which can be sold only to adults
  • If you are under 18, you can't have fireworks in public places
  • Both the above can lead to an £80 on-the-spot fine

Firework code

  1. Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable.
  2. Keep fireworks in a closed box and use them one at a time.
  3. Read and follow the instructions on each firework using a torch if necessary.
  4. Light the firework at arm's length with a taper and stand well back.
  5. Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks.
  6. Never return to a firework once it has been lit.
  7. Don't put fireworks in pockets and never throw them.
  8. Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators.
  9. Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire.
  10. Make sure that the fire is out and surroundings are made safe before leaving

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend an organised event, of which there is many in North and West Yorkshire.
